Papers consist of correspondence, financial records, writings, and other items. Correspondence (1820-1937) of the family of Nathaniel Russell Middleton (1810-1890) primarily concerns family and personal matters, but also business and College of Charleston affairs, the Civil War, and other matters. Correspondents include Nathaniel Russell Middleton, Nathaniel Russell Middleton, Jr., Anna E. De Wolf Middleton, Alicia H. Middleton, Maria Middleton (later Maria Doar), Charlotte H. Middleton (later Charlotte De Wolf), Arthur Middleton, Walter Izard Middleton, Henry Izard Middleton, Doar family members, and others. Letters (some typewritten transcriptions) are written from Charleston (S.C.), Bristol (R.I.), Stono Plantation (S.C.), Paris (France), and Rome (Italy). Financial records (1828-1900) include receipts for household and other expenses, invoices, bankbooks, bills, accounts, and a De Wolf family receipt book (1857-1870). Other items include the will (1930) of Alicia Hopton Middleton, a copy of the will (1889) of Anne Elizabeth De Wolf Middleton, floor plans of a house (n.d.), calling cards, clippings, invitations, and a pamphlet (ca. 1853) memorializing the death of four De Wolf family children. Writings include fragments of a typewritten manuscript of "Life in Carolina and New England during the Nineteenth Century" by Alicia Hopton Middleton (published 1929). Fragments are entitled "Reminiscences of Nathaniel Russell Middleton" and "Record of Nathaniel Russell Middleton, Jr." There are also typewritten copies of Middleton family correspondence (1844-1862) used in the book, and correspondence (1929-1930) concerning publication and sales of the book. Other writings include poetry collected or written by Middleton family members.
